FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LIFE IN THE BEAUTIFUL SEASHORE OF BAY OF BENGAL I SURFED BACK AND FORTH, WITH AND AGAINST THE WAVES AT KOVELAM BEACH IN TAMIL NADU, INDIA.
It was not my first time in a beach but I had never swam or surfed in the ocean.
On a road trip with five friends we were fun driving around southern India covering four states without any concrete plan except Saturday surfing at Kovalam Beach.
We had our tents but April was hitting hard and the humid weather in coastal area for a Northerner like me was not a suitable habitat and hence we ended up booking hotel in Pondicherry.
It was around 4:30 in evening on a Saturday when we reached Murthy’s Surfing school “Surf Turf” at Kovalam Beach, Tamil Nadu. He was happy to welcome us himself and in no time I along with my friends was in the beach getting first surfing lesion of our lives by the 2017 Surf Champion “Captain of the School”.
The salty water and the burning eyes were a no problem as soon as I learnt to hop over the surf board and pedal. From the instructors telling when to stand with the wave and out of instructions pedaling against the waves I was having the time of my life.
For a northerner who is in love with mountains it didn’t hit in the deepest of heart till the waves coming at me crushed me and my board away several times. Finally when I could stand on the board properly and dance with the growing waves I had my Surfing course planned in my head.
My board would take off against the crushing waves and bamm!! I would hit the salty Bay of Bengal and start pedaling preparing for another wave to hit.
Along with all the surfing going on I zoned out and found a piece of myself on against the waves. In these past months I had traveled to few places in Southern India but something was missing. This new love for surfing at the sea made up for my travels around Southern India.
The evening was made by the full moon pulling the sea waves to the sky with a spread of heavenly beautiful lights over the waves. With the beautiful waves on them the waves would go crazy to touch the moon and give out their biggest roar and we were lucky to witness this love story from the rooftop open space at surf turf, Surfing school.
As during travel it’s important to be on the go to witness more and more places which would turn out to be the pieces of your soul, I had to say goodbye to the beautiful beach where i surfed for the first time.
